Team History

According to Henry Sibley yearbooks, the first girls swim & dive team was in the 1970-1971 school year. That school year was also the first year of the Frances M. Grass Pool at the Frances M. Grass Junior High (now Heritage Middle School).

The 2019-2020 season marked the 50th year of Henry Sibley High School Girls Swim & Dive!

Here is ourĀ  list of MVPs over the years.

New Aquatic Center

The aquatic was opened in the late fall of the 2020-2021 school year, towards the first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Girls team did not have a season in the new facility that year as there were manufacturing delays on the gutter system due to the pandemic. Thus, the Girls team held the 2020-2021 season in the Heritage Middle School pool. However, the team got a surprise a week before Section 4A Championships that the pool was finished. They completed their last week of training in the new facility! The Boys 2020-2021 team had their entire season in the new facility. The first full season in the new facility for the Girls team was that next year, 2021-2022.

The aquatic center was part of a $177 million school bond issue and was passed by voters in 2018. The existing Heritage Pool was suffering from significant water leakage issues. It was deemed better to replace it with a new facility instead of trying to fix the aging facility.

COVID-19 Pandemic Seasons

No seasons were cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic, but there were modifications. The MSHSL decided in early August 2020 that Fall sports would be held, with certain restrictions: health safety policies for practices and competitions, a limited competition schedule, and no State tournaments.

For 2020-2021, the season began on the normal mid-way August date, but completed early in end of October. The Section 4A Championships were conducted as three timed finals sessions splitting the teams into one of three season. There was no State meet, but state results were consolidated from all of the results from each section to provide unofficial state results.

Practices involved splitting the team into two smaller pods to keep them to 24 or less athletes. Two practices were held each day (4 - 6 PM M-Sa for the varsity pod and 6:10 - 7:10 PM MWF for the JV pod). Each lane had four or less swimmers with them dividing themselves into deep and shallow end groups.

The team had to limit its divers to four. They practiced at The Grove Aquatic Center with Simley.

Each team in the conference competed in ten dual meets. Each school competed against each of the other seven teams. Additionally, each team competed against three other teams again, as an exhibition meet.

The 2021-2022 season were normal besides health safety policies at practices and competitions. That mostly involved masking on deck.

For the 2022-2023, the season resumed as before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Diving Practice

With the new Aquatic Center and its "stretch pool," diving practice is held at the same time as swimming practice! Prior to that, it was help for several season with the Simley team at the Grove Aquatic Center. Prior to that, we don't have information. It probably was held at the Heritage Pool during or before/after swimming practice.
